VPN 101: what does a VPN do?

A device connects through an encrypted tunnel to a VPN server, then to a website.

A VPN sends selected traffic through an encrypted connection to a VPN server. Websites reached through it see that server’s public IP address. This can help on an untrusted network or when you need a connection from another location.

1. Your device
Traffic enters the VPN connection.
2. VPN server
The tunnel runs between your device and this server.
3. Website
The website sees the VPN server’s public IP.

HTTPS separately protects the connection between your browser and a website. A VPN does not guarantee streaming access, stop every form of tracking or make a crypto purchase anonymous.

Choose the VPN before choosing the payment

Desktop, laptop, smartphone and tablet connected by a VPN shield

Start with how you will use the VPN: the devices you own, the locations you need and the features you rely on. Check that the chosen plan supports those needs, including its app and connection limits. Then compare the full price, refund terms and available crypto payment options.

A full VPN app, browser extension and router configuration can cover different traffic.

Is the longer offer worth it?

Compare the amount you will actually commit and the next renewal term. NordVPN’s introductory example includes three extra months; its renewal price applies to 12 months. PureVPN separately displayed a 27-month Standard promotion at US$58.20 before tax. A lower monthly equivalent is useful only if the full term suits you.

Cryptwerk company pages also list merchant offers. Recheck expiry, eligibility and the checkout total before using a promotion. A short paid period can be worth considering where crypto payments are non-refundable.

From plan selection to working VPN

Five purchase steps: plan, crypto checkout, invoice checks, payment, account activation.

A crypto payment and VPN activation are separate stages. Follow the steps below to check the order, send the correct payment and confirm that the subscription is ready to use.

1. Choose the plan
Confirm time included, taxes and extras.
2. Open crypto checkout
Select an available payment method.
3. Check the invoice
Match asset, network, amount, address and expiry.
4. Send payment
Allow for withdrawal fees; keep the order ID and TXID.
5. Confirm access
Check paid time in your account, then set up the app.

A VPN’s crypto checkout may use a separate payment processor. A reseller gift card needs redemption and can have region or account restrictions. A crypto-funded card may settle to the provider in fiat. Check which route you are using and who handles the refund.

Payment sent, but access is missing?

Transaction pending:
check the correct network and the invoice’s required confirmations.
Invoice expired, underpaid or paid with the wrong asset:
contact the named processor before sending more funds. Recovery is not guaranteed.
Invoice paid, account inactive:
check the account and subscription history, then send the VPN provider your order reference and transaction ID.

Keep payment references private. Support does not need your wallet recovery phrase or private key.

Does crypto payment make the purchase anonymous?

A person checks a laptop beside symbols for account, transaction and network records

Payment, account and VPN traffic leave different records. Several providers ask for an email; Mullvad uses an account number. A processor can associate a transaction with an order, and an exchange can retain withdrawal records. Check account requirements and the provider’s logging policy as well as the payment method.

Account, payment and traffic records are separate things to check.

A simpler way to choose a VPN

Use your requirements to build a shortlist, then check the exact offer.
