Buterin Says Ethereum Must Be Simplified To Be “Trustless”

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has started a debate in the crypto industry after claiming the network is still not fully “trustless” despite being decentralized. In comments shared on the social media platform X in mid-December, Buterin argued that true trustlessness goes beyond open-source code and distributed validators. 

He claims that it instead depends on how many people can actually understand the protocol in its entirety. Buterin believes that as Ethereum continues to evolve with upgrades and abstractions, it is becoming too complex. This complexity risks undermining one of the blockchain’s most fundamental promises.
