Wild Boar Vertebrae

This bone is from a wild boar—a robust, medium-sized suid (pig) with a stocky build, coarse bristles, and prominent tusks. Their vertebrae are notably strong, providing essential support for their powerful muscles used in rooting and foraging.
Originally found across North Africa and Eurasia, wild boars faced near extinction in the early 20th century. However, their keen adaptability allowed them to rebound dramatically. Escapes from farms and zoos have led to their rapid repopulation, making them a highly invasive species in many areas.
Today, wild boars are an ecological challenge to control due to their ability to outcompete native species and their prolific breeding. In North America, where this vertebra sample was found, boars present issues with native wildlife, crops, and disease transmission.
Despite various control measures, their populations continue to grow, demonstrating their remarkable resilience and adaptability.
All natural specimens are humanely-sourced. This animal lived and died naturally in the wild and its bones were found and identified by our foragers.
