At the end of this training program, your team will be able to open a wide variety of data files and create simple analysis applications with Python.
This course is designed for people without any prior programming experience. If you already have basic Python knowledge we can skip to intermediate level content.
Prerequisites: Linux desktop (Debian or Ubuntu) with full administrator rights. Network connection with Slack, WebEx, Signal or FaceTime video conference software installed.
5 hours of training can be used in a single day, or separated into 1 hour sessions spread over a two week time period.
The focus of this course is to learn core Python concepts while also learning basic data analysis techniques.
First we will learn to use a terminal shell and text editor to launch our applications from the command line.
Next we will learn how to use an integrated development environment (IDE) and venv, which is the builtin Python virtualization module.
Python is considered an interpreted programming language which means it meticulously runs your application code one statement at a time. This also means you can use it interactively and use a command prompt.
Interactive Python (IPython) takes of this feature and is the core component of Jupyter notebooks which is a browser-based way to interact with the kernel.
Jupyter notebooks and the pandas library are widely used tools that are used to manipulate data and create professional visualizations.
After our environments are setup, we will move straight into the core components of the language itself.
Python object types are covered, we will learn how to manipulate different data types.
At the end of this session, we work with opening and closing data files which will continue for the rest of the course. We will practice working with different types of data and also common desktop apps, skills you will immediately be able to use in your daily work.
We will briefly cover errors, exception handling and annotations.
For the rest of the sessions we will learn to write functions which are the core component of most applications.
At the end of our session, we will explore some next steps such as self guided books or online training to match your learning objective
