Red yeast rice: 600 mg per capsule.

Liver Safeguard blend: Milk thistle seed, dandelion root, turmeric root, reishi, ginger root, burdock root, shiitake, artichoke and yellow dock, about 400 mg combined.

Monacolin K: Not stated on the label.

Bottle: 60 vegan capsules, 60 days at 1 a day.

What red yeast rice is, and what it is not, is set out in our red yeast rice overview.

Monacolin K: The Compound That Matters
Red yeast rice lowers cholesterol in trials because of monacolin K, a compound the mold makes during fermentation. In its lactone form it is identical to lovastatin, a prescription statin.[1]Scientific opinion on the safety of monacolins in red yeast rice — EFSA Journal (2018) View source

FDA: Lists monacolin K as also known as lovastatin, in category 4, excluded from the supplement definition.[2]Information on Select Dietary Supplement Ingredients: Red Yeast Rice — U.S. Food and Drug Administration View source

NCCIH: Consumers cannot know the monacolin K content of a product.[3]Red Yeast Rice — National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health View source

Our label: States the rice weight, 600 mg, not a monacolin dose.

What follows: We make no cholesterol claim for this product.

How that molecule compares with a prescribed statin is explained in red yeast rice vs statins.

In trials with products of known monacolin content, pooled LDL fell by 1.02 mmol/L, about 39 mg/dL, against placebo.[4]Red yeast rice LDL reduction: systematic review and meta-analysis — Atherosclerosis (2015) View source In a 2023 trial, a store-bought red yeast rice product did not differ from placebo after 28 days.[5]Low-Dose Rosuvastatin, Placebo, and Dietary Supplements on Lipids — Journal of the American College of Cardiology (2023) View source Every trial with its dose is in red yeast rice for cholesterol, trial by trial.

Why Red Yeast Rice Products Differ
Independent laboratories have tested shelf products since 2001, and every survey found the same problem: the active compound and the contaminant vary from bottle to bottle.

Product survey
What was tested
What testing found

2010, United States
12 products, each labelled 600 mg
Monacolin K 0.10 to 10.09 mg per capsule; citrinin high in 4

2014, United States
14 supplements
Monacolin K 0.03 to 2.18 mg per 600 mg

2017, United States
28 brands
None in 2; 0.09 to 5.48 mg per 1,200 mg in the rest

2021, European Union
37 products
Citrinin in all 37; label content off in 33

In 2010, 12 products all labelled 600 mg held 0.10 to 10.09 mg of monacolin K per capsule, and 4 had high citrinin, a kidney toxin.[6]Marked variability of monacolin levels in commercial red yeast rice products — Archives of Internal Medicine (2010) View source What to check before buying any brand is covered in red yeast rice brands to avoid.

About the Liver Safeguard Blend
The name describes the herbs in the blend. It is not a tested protection, and we want that to be clear before you buy.

Tested as liver protection with red yeast rice: 0 trials.

Individual herb amounts: Not stated on the label.

Turmeric: Has its own series of 10 liver injury cases in the US.

Practical meaning: Follow the same liver cautions as for plain red yeast rice.

The turmeric cases come from the US Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network.[7]Liver Injury Associated with Turmeric: Ten DILIN Cases — American Journal of Medicine (2023) View source

Safety and Who Should Not Take It
Because monacolin K is a statin compound, red yeast rice can cause statin-type side effects. In 53 trials muscle complaints were no more common than with control, but reporting systems record rare rhabdomyolysis and hepatitis.[8]Safety of red yeast rice supplementation: meta-analysis of randomized trials — Pharmacological Research (2019) View source

NCCIH does not recommend red yeast rice in pregnancy or lactation. The full list of risks is in red yeast rice side effects and drug interactions.

Interactions
Monacolin K is cleared like lovastatin, by an enzyme called CYP3A4, so anything that blocks it raises exposure.

A prescribed statin: Never combine; it would be 2 drugs of 1 class.

Grapefruit juice: Double-strength juice raised lovastatin exposure 15-fold in 1 study.[9]Grapefruit juice greatly increases serum concentrations of lovastatin — Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (1998) View source

Cyclosporine: Linked to rhabdomyolysis with red yeast rice in a transplant patient.

Other red yeast rice products: Our Cholesterol Power Pack already includes this bottle.

Show this bottle to your pharmacist alongside your other medicines.

How to Take It
There is no official dose for red yeast rice, and the 600 mg on the label is rice weight, not a monacolin dose.

Amount: 1 capsule daily, as directed on the label.

Timing: With a meal, at the same time each day; the evening meal is a sensible default.

Recheck: Ask for a lipid test after 6 to 8 weeks.

More capsules: Not without your clinician's agreement.

EFSA could not identify any monacolin intake from supplements that raised no safety concern.[10]Additional data on the safety of monacolins from red yeast rice — EFSA Journal (2025) View source Dose, timing and duration are covered in red yeast rice dosage and timing.

What We Will and Will Not Say
No trial makes 1 red yeast rice capsule better than another, so the honest differentiators are what is in the bottle and what this page is willing to state.

We state: 600 mg of red yeast rice and the 9 herbs in the blend.

We do not state: A monacolin K amount or an LDL percentage.

We do not claim: That it replaces a statin or protects the liver.

We ask you to: Use it only with your clinician's knowledge.

If you are weighing CoQ10 alongside it, the evidence is in red yeast rice and CoQ10.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is in Red Yeast Rice with Liver Safeguard? +
Each capsule holds a 1,000 mg proprietary formula: 600 mg of red yeast rice plus 9 herbs, including milk thistle, dandelion and turmeric. Individual herb amounts and monacolin K content are not stated on the label.

Does this product lower cholesterol? +
We make no cholesterol claim. Trial products with known monacolin K lowered LDL by about 39 mg/dL, but our label does not state a monacolin dose, and a 2023 trial of a store-bought product matched placebo.

How much monacolin K is in each capsule? +
It is not stated on the label. Surveys of products with 600 mg of rice found 0.03 to 10.09 mg per capsule, so no amount can be assumed for any brand, including ours.

Is red yeast rice a statin? +
Its monacolin K is identical to lovastatin in lactone form, so it acts like a statin. That is why it must never be combined with a prescribed statin, even for 1 day.

Can I take this with my statin? +
No. That would mean 2 statin-class compounds at once, with an unknown dose of 1 of them, raising the risk of muscle and liver injury.

Does Liver Safeguard protect my liver? +
No trial has tested that, and we do not claim it. The blend contains 9 herbs; 1 of them, turmeric, has its own reports of liver injury.

Who should not take red yeast rice? +
Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone on a statin or cyclosporine, and people with liver or kidney disease. NCCIH notes 0 safety studies in pregnancy.

What are the side effects? +
Muscle aches and, rarely, rhabdomyolysis; rare liver injury; and stomach upset. In 53 trials muscle complaints were no more common than with control.

Can I drink grapefruit juice while taking it? +
Best avoided. Double-strength grapefruit juice raised lovastatin exposure 15-fold in 1 study, and monacolin K is the same molecule.

When should I take it? +
With a meal, at the same time each day. No trial has tested red yeast rice timing; short half-life statins worked slightly better at night, by 0.21 mmol/L LDL.

How long does 1 bottle last? +
60 capsules last 60 days at 1 capsule daily. Ask for a lipid test after 6 to 8 weeks rather than judging by how you feel.

Should I take CoQ10 with it? +
It is optional. Statins lower blood CoQ10, but 2 meta-analyses disagree on whether CoQ10 eases muscle aches. This product contains no CoQ10.
