Description
Mammoths had exceptionally thick, coarse hair which provided insulation in extreme climates. With tusks up to 15 feet long and a body mass of 6 tons, the woolly mammoth was nothing short of a behemoth. Being covered in heavy fur, mammoths were well prepared to survive the ice-age. This fur consisted of a longer "guard hair" as well as a short undercoat.
This sample of mammoth hair is a combination of the guard hair and undercoat and exhibits a defined contrast of colors.
