Description
The Aune N7 is a fully discrete Class A / Class AB headphone amplifier that puts up to 6.5 watts of balanced output into a chassis just over eight inches wide. It uses design ideas from Aune's larger amplifiers, including a twin JFET input stage, R2R volume control, and two bias current settings, in a size that fits a crowded desk.
The N7 is a pure analog amplifier and preamp with no DAC inside. Feed it from any DAC or streamer over RCA or balanced XLR, and it handles everything after the conversion. It is a good first serious amplifier for listeners stepping up from a dongle or an all-in-one DAC/amp.
Class A and Class AB Operation
Aune describes the N7 as a Class A / Class AB amplifier. At low output, its transistors run in Class A, carrying current all the time, which avoids crossover distortion, a small error that can occur when transistors hand the signal back and forth. As output rises, the N7 moves into Class AB, which runs cooler and makes its full 6.5 watts possible.
Aune publishes where that change happens. From the balanced output, the N7 stays in Class A up to 57.2mW into 32 ohms and up to 540mW into 300 ohms, and runs in Class AB above those levels. In-ear monitors and efficient headphones at normal volume sit inside that range, while demanding planar headphones will push it into Class AB.
Our reviewer Cameron Oatley (GoldenSound) measured the N7's power draw at the wall and found the behavior of a high-bias Class AB design. He still called it his go-to amp under $500 and an easy default recommendation for high-end desktop performance at this price.
Twin JFET Input
JFETs have high input impedance and a smooth, tube-like sound, without a tube's fragility or maintenance. The N7 uses a matched pair of twin JFETs packaged together, so both devices heat up evenly and keep the circuit's midpoint voltage stable. That keeps the sound consistent from the moment you turn it on through a long listening session.
Bias Current and Gain Settings
The N7 has two bias current settings. A-L runs more efficiently and gives a tighter, more focused sound, and A-H gives a fuller presentation with more body and richness. The display shows the active setting in blue or red along with the internal temperature. Two gain settings then match the output to the headphone, from sensitive in-ear monitors on low gain to demanding full-size headphones on high.
Aune measures the noise floor at 3 microvolts in high gain and THD+N below 0.0004% at 1kHz, so in-ear monitors play against a quiet background. Harder-to-drive headphones get up to 6,570mW into 32 ohms or 750mW into 300 ohms from the balanced output. The full aluminum chassis has heatsink fins along its sides to keep temperatures stable.
R2R Volume Control
The N7 uses two JRC R2R electronic volume chips with dedicated op-amps, forming a four-channel balanced volume chain. A conventional potentiometer can lose left-right balance at the bottom of its range. This control stays matched at low volume, which matters for late-night listening, and it keeps imaging and soundstage intact.
One multifunctional knob handles volume, input, bias current, gain, and headphone or preamp switching, and the 3-inch display is easy to read from across the desk. An aluminum remote is included for adjusting volume from the couch.
Preamp Outputs
The N7 has two headphone outputs (6.35mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced), two line inputs (RCA and XLR), and two preamp outputs (RCA and XLR), with an independent preamp mode. Connect powered monitors or a power amplifier, and the N7 becomes the control center of a compact desktop system for both headphones and speakers.
Power comes from an external 18V adapter, which keeps AC conversion outside the chassis. Component selection follows Aune's desktop line: Panasonic electrolytic capacitors, WIMA decoupling capacitors, and a communication-grade PCB.
How the N7 Compares
The natural reference point is Aune's own S17 Pro EVO, which shares the twin JFET input, R2R volume, and selectable bias current. The S17 Pro EVO adds a 50W internal toroidal supply, a 4-pin XLR output, 7.5 watts of balanced power, and a much wider Class A range: 2.07 watts into 32 ohms against the N7's 57.2mW. The N7 costs half as much, and 6.5 watts balanced is more power than most amplifiers near $399 offer. Run your own headphones through our headphone power calculator to see how much you need.
Aune's own photos pair the N7 with its AR5000 open-back, and the two make a warm, spacious desktop system for well under a thousand dollars. The N7 works just as well with any DAC you already own.
